Wednesdays
Whickham 10am - 11.15am Introduction to meditation with Kelsang Sherab.
South Gosforth 7pm with Kelsang Sherab.
This class takes general Buddhist principles to a deeper level. It is not suitable for beginners.
Other Classes
We have day courses about once a month. This is an opportunity to
deepen our experience of meditation. For details of our next day course
What to Expect in a Class
Classes begin with a simple guided meditation exercise to reduce stress,
tension, and distractions. This is followed by a discussion on how to
apply Buddhist principles in daily life. Finally, there is a guided
meditation designed to help us gain deeper experience of the subject
of the class.
After the class there is a chance to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while
relaxing or discussing the ideas presented in the class with the teacher
and other participants.
All the classes listed here are drop in classes and are open to everyone.
You do not need any previous experience to attend, nor do you need to
pre-register. Just choose a class and come along.
In order to cover the costs for running these classes we request a donation
of £5 /£3 (low/unwaged). However, please do not feel unable to come due
to a lack of funds.
Why not come along and see for yourself what meditation can do for you?
Study Programs
Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has designed three special spiritual programs
for the systematic study and practice of Kadampa Buddhism that are especially
suited to the modern world: the General Programme (GP), the Foundation
Programme(FP), and the Teacher Training Program(TTP). At Compassion Centre,
we offer students the opportunity to follow the General and Foundation Programmes.
The General Programme provides a basic introduction
to Buddhist view, meditation,
and practice that is suitable for beginners. It also includes advanced teachings
and practices from both Sutra and Tantra.
The General Programme is currently taught at several venues throughout the
Tyne and Wear area.
The Foundation Programme, currently held on Friday evenings and Saturday
Mornings at Compassion Centre, provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding
and experience of Buddhism through a systematic study of Buddhist texts.
Currently, we are studying Joyful Path of Good Fortune, a commentary to
Atisha's Lamrim instructions, the stages of the path to enlightenment.
Students on the Foundation Programme must usually purchase a Centre Card ,
Currently £35 per month, usually paid by Standing Order, which entitles
the holder to attend all classes held by Compassion Centre free of charge.
